Life can be stressful. There’s so much going on, work, family, relationships that when it doesn’t all fit looking after yourself is the the first thing to go.

You are so busy being a wife, mother, daughter and valued employee that you skip meals, have little rest or relaxation and stop doing the things you love.
This can’t go on forever though. How much quality time can you spend with friends and family when you are frazzled and on the verge of collapse.

Short on time? Pin this post for later.

You need to stop, take a step back and look at the changes you need to make, how you can deal with the effects of stress, and be present for your friends and family.

But we do you start? Luckily self care is a super hot topic these days. If you are just beginning your self care journey there are so many books, guides and journals to help you on your way.

Self care was the most important part of my fight against anxiety. When I first started taking care of myself I read everything I could get my hands on and still do if I’m honest. I wanted to share my favourite ones with you.

Calm by Fearne Cotton

CALM is the follow up to the bestselling HAPPY. It follows the same format of sectioning the book into different areas of your life. Body, mind, family, work and environment are just some of the topic covered.

Each section shows how you can bring calm to that aspect of your life. The book is filled with expert advice, tips, ideas and activities and strategies that the author herself has used to find calm.

This book is for those of us who are overwhelmed by modern life, who feel like life is running away from them and they just can’t get a grip of it.
It helps you find those moments of calm in the chaos, to relax and take pleasure from the simple things in life.

The Little Book Of Hygge by Meik Wiking

This book is a guide to the Danish art of Hygge. Pronounced "hooga", hygge can be translated as a sense of comfort, togetherness, and well-being. The book gives an introduction to the practice, then shows how we can incorporate it into our own lives.
The author explains how to get comfy, be present, build good relationships and indulge in the things you love. From the correct lighting to the right clothing to wear, this book gives you the full hygge experience.

This book is for anyone who loves getting comfy and relaxing. Having a love of coffee and cake helps a little too! The good news is, hygge is not just for winter as there is a chapter on practicing the art all year round.

The Self Care Project by Jayne Hardy

This book tells you everything you could possibly want to know about self care. The author believes that self care is a tool we all have to help us take responsibility for our physical, emotional and mental well-being, we just need to learn how to use it properly.

The book explains that self care is not only not selfish but vital to our well-being. It gives practical advice on how to find time for daily self care and how to overcome any obstacles that may be in your way.

This book is for anyone who has been feeling at odds with life and know they need to make a change. I found it well written and the steps for self care are explained in a practical no nonsense way.
