How To Create A Successful Morning Routine

Create a successful morning routine. learn how to implement a healthy morning routine to increase productivity and achieve calm and balance for the rest of your day.

I have never been a morning person. It has always taken at least 3 cups of coffee before I feel even slightly human.
I have always had problems waking up, I set 5 alarms and hit the snooze button about 57 times.
As long as I’ve been old enough to do as I please I have skipped breakfast. I always felt too rough to eat. Every day for years I ate nothing until lunch.
Things were getting worse, it was taking me longer and longer to come around, sometimes I was sleepy all day. My productivity was suffering, I was sluggish and my energy was nonexistent.

None of this is good, something had to be done. It was suggested that I try getting myself into more of a routine in the morning. If I had more time, was more organised, and did something I enjoyed in the morning then I was much more likely to have a happy, productive day.

The Benefits Of A Morning Routine

  • If you are organised and productive in the morning then you will continue in the same way for the rest of the day.
  • You will start off the day much calmer and happier if you have more time in the morning.
  • Your physical and emotional health will be improved.
  • You will have more energy.
  • You get time that is only for you.

When creating a morning routine it’s important to be realistic about what you can achieve in the time you have allowed yourself. Write down the most essential things and the things that you love to do. I chose a mix of these two lists. Choose things that you know will make you happy and feel good for the rest of the day. You will probably need to try out your morning routine a few times before you get it right. It’s probably a good idea to ease into your routine, try doing it for a few days a week at first then gradually add on more days. Here are some ideas.

Sleep Well

One of the most important things for a good morning is a good nights sleep. Adults should be getting at least 7-8 hours sleep per night. Check out my tips for an amazing nights sleep here. If you are well rested you are much more likely to have a good, productive morning.

Wake Up In The Right Way

Try to wake up at least half an hour earlier than you used to. Under no circumstances press snooze. The longer you stay in bed, the harder it is to get out of it.
Choose the best way to wake up for you, this may be music or ambient sounds. Waking up in a pleasant way will make you much more likely to follow through with your morning routine. Try not to keep your phone or tablet too close so you won’t be tempted to use it before you get up.
The snooze button was my downfall and I would enter into this never ending circle of waking up, hitting snooze, and going back to sleep.

Let In The Natural Light

Open those blinds and let in the light as soon as you can. Exposure to natural light will help you to be happier, more productive, healthier, and calmer.

Tidy Up

Make your bed, pick up clothes and have a general tidy. It doesn’t take long if you do this every morning and is so much better than coming home to it after a long day. It also helps you get into a productive mindset for the day ahead.

Drink Some Water

One of the best things you can do as soon as you get up is to drink a couple of glasses of water. We can’t forget that our body has gone at least 8 hours with nothing to drink.
This will hydrate you, help you flush toxins out of your body and push up your metabolism.

Get Some Exercise

Exercising in the morning is great for your metabolism and can improve your physical and mental energy. It will enhance your self discipline as you may find it difficult at first but developing the habit will get easier over time.
This doesn’t have to be anything too ambitious. You could go for a morning walk, do some stretches or a simple yoga routine. Make sure that the exercise you choose matches your level of fitness. You don’t want to overdo it.

Eat A Healthy Breakfast

A healthy, nutritious breakfast has many benefits. It will give you strength and energy for the day to come and improve your concentration. If essential vitamins and minerals are missed at breakfast then they are less likely to be compensated for later in the day.
I have found that I am less likely to snack on unhealthy food during the day and I just feel generally better after eating breakfast.
The healthiest foods you could eat for breakfast are eggs, yoghurt, oatmeal, berries, nuts, seeds, and fruit.

Try Some Morning Affirmations

Morning affirmations are excellent for creating a positive mindset for the day ahead.
You become aware of your thoughts and are less likely to let negativity in. They help you keep things in perspective so you are grateful for what you have in life instead of worrying about what you don’t have.
The positive energy that daily affirmations create will encourage you to keep up the practice.

Meditation

Morning is the best time to meditate, it’s quiet and peaceful, and your mind is still at rest and has had little stimulation.
Even if it’s just for 10 minutes, a guided meditation will bring calm and balance to your day. Your mind will be less busy and you will feel better equipped to handle the day. The focus required to meditate will stay with you throughout the day.

Write Down Your Daily Goals

Each morning write down between 5 and 10 things you want to achieve that day. Keep your list with you so you can tick them off as you go along.
Writing down your daily goals clarified exactly what you want to achieve and will motivate you to take action. Ticking off each goal as you achieve them gives you a chance to chart your progress and celebrate your wins.

Now if I said I jumped into this wholeheartedly and it was perfect from the start I would be lying. But after a bit of trial and error and quite a few weeks, I think I’ve got there. It was difficult at first but the benefits far outweigh the initial effort.
