What Is Happiness?

Happiness is the feeling of being happy, joyful, content, or satisfied in life. Or at least, that’s the dictionary definition. It’s what everyone wants, and few people find. Some people spend their whole lives searching for it and never find it. Far more common, however, are the people who spend their days trudging through a mediocre life trying not to be miserable and dreaming of a happy life that seems impossible.

Are you one of them? Do you want to be happy but have written it off as impossible? Have you settled for a life that isn’t what you want but is “good enough” or the “best you can do?”

Do you feel constrained by forces beyond your control that keep you from doing what you really want with your life? Do you feel like nothing you could do would make a difference in your life?

You don’t have to do this to yourself. There’s no need to settle or give up on your dreams. The life you want isn’t impossible and telling yourself it is will only lead you down the path to misery. You have the power to control your life. You just have to seize it.

What is happiness? Happiness is living your best life. It’s working towards your dreams and goals. It’s taking control of your destiny and doing your best to make the things you want to happen come true. It’s having a positive outlook and not letting setbacks and obstacles stop you from reaching your goals.

Happiness is knowing what you want and going out to get it. Do you not know what you want from life? That can also be a problem holding you back. Set out to find it. You can figure it out.

Chances are good that you already know but aren’t ready to admit it yet. That could be for any number of reasons, usually because it makes you feel self-conscious, and you worry about how other people will react. You need to stop judging yourself and stop worrying about other people’s reactions if you want to find happiness.

It is possible to find happiness in life. No matter where you are or what your circumstances currently are, if you want to find happiness in life, you can. First, you have to believe that it’s possible. Then you need to go out and get it.

That’s it. That’s the secret. What are you waiting for?

4 Rules to Live a Happy Life

You’ve decided to do what it takes to be happy. That’s great! You’ve got a great future ahead of you. Deciding to change your life is the first step towards making it better. But what do you do now? What are the key components of this new life you’re seeking?

Being happy can be defined as living your best life. What does this mean? Like anything else worth doing, it’s complex but has a few key building blocks that give it a solid foundation. Here they are.

Having Meaning in Your Life

Do you have a purpose in your life? Something larger than yourself that moves you to get up in the morning? If not, you’ll need to find it. This doesn’t mean you need to find something to help you change the world -your purpose might be taking care of your family or growing the best roses in the state. It’s your life, after all. You get to define it.

Going After Your Hopes and Dreams

If you want to live your best life, you have to go for it. That means chasing down the things you want to get from life. Again, it doesn’t matter what they are -it’s your life, you make the rules -the important thing is that you have dreams and work to make them come true.

Other people are going to try and convince you that you can’t do it. Tune them out. This is YOUR life, after all. You and you alone are in charge of it.

Develop a Positive Outlook

Learn to look on the bright side. Become an optimist. Don’t let setbacks deter you from reaching your dreams. Bad things are going to happen in life. That’s a given. How you react to them is up to you. A positive outlook will help you to bounce back and reach your goals.

Cultivate Healthy Relationships

Humans are social creatures. You must have good relationships to thrive and be happy. Toxic relationships will hold you back and harm your mental health. Healthy relationships can be cultivated like anything else. Notice and change your toxic behaviours.

Spend time with the people you care about. Try to change any toxic relationships and if you can’t, end them or distance yourself from the other person. Meet new people and develop healthy relationships with them.

These are the building blocks of a happy life. If you can develop these four things, you’ll be well on your way to living a life full of happiness.

Find Your Purpose

One of the building blocks to happiness is having a purpose in your life. Your purpose is the motivating force that drives you. It’s why you get up and why you work hard. It’s the reason behind the decisions you make and the steps you take to reach your goals. It’s the primary “why” that pushes you towards your dreams.

A purpose can be simple or transcendental. It can be inward-directed, towards something important to you -such as achieving enlightenment through meditation or writing a great novel -or outward-directed, towards other people or things. Examples of the latter would be taking care of your family, making converts for your church, or stopping clear-cutting in your local national park.

No purpose is better than any other. There’s no such thing as a “bad,” “good,” or “better” purpose. You don’t need to rank them in order of what they do for the world. Each person is unique and so is their purpose.

Ignore anyone who tries to tell you what your purpose in life should be or what it should be focused on. This includes your own brain. A lifetime of social conditioning may trick your mind into believing that only certain things count as a “real” purpose. This is nonsense.

Don’t try to convince yourself that you should imitate Mother Theresa if your real purpose is breeding tulips. Both are valuable and needed in the world.

If you don’t yet know what your purpose is, don’t despair. Not everyone knows right away. Your purpose can also change as you age. When you’re young, it might be about working hard and raising your children, and when they leave the house, it can shift to painting, windsurfing, or saving the blue whales. Such is life.

Start looking for your purpose in the things that are most important to you and the things that make you the happiest. Make lists of each of these and examine them. They hold the key to your purpose. Somewhere on these two lists should be something you love with all your heart, something that drives you to get up and do things.

If you’ve done this and are still lost, it’s time to start trying new things. Make a list of things you’ve never done and start crossing them off. Go places you’ve always wanted to go. Get out and meet new people and have new experiences. Keep an open mind and somewhere along the way, you’ll find the spark that can become your life’s purpose.

What Are Your Dreams?

One of the most, if not the most, important aspects of being happy is following your dreams. Everyone has things they want in life, goals they hope to achieve, and secret desires they hide from others and possibly even from themselves.

What are yours? Do you know? Don’t write the question off as silly or immature. “Only kids have dreams. I’m an adult. I have responsibilities, bills to pay, people to care for…” Yes, and? You also have hopes and dreams. Everyone does. They aren’t silly, either. They’re what your heart and soul really want.

Psychologists who study happiness have conducted many end-of-life surveys with elderly people in nursing homes and terminally ill younger people. The happiest among them are all the ones who went after what they wanted from life, who actively pursued their goals and chased down their dreams.

What about the less happy? What’s their biggest regret? It’s rarely something they did; rather, the biggest regrets most people have at the end of their lives are the things they didn’t do -the dreams they let fall by the wayside, the goals they didn’t pursue, the lives they could have lived but didn’t.

You don’t want to be one of these latter people. You want to live a happy life, not reach old age full of regrets and might-have-beens. So, what are your dreams? What do you want from life?

Take out a sheet of paper and an ink pen. If you’re sure what your dreams are, that’s great. Write them down. If not, it’s time for a brainstorming session. What would you do with your life if time and money were no obstacle? If you could do anything -anything at all -what would it be?

Don’t censor yourself. It doesn’t matter how silly or ridiculous it sounds. Write it all down. Be honest -don’t write “buy a nice house and a fast car” if that’s not what you want deep down. Write what you want, not what society expects you to want.

If you’re still having trouble with this, think back to the little kid you once were. What did that child want, back when there were no limits, and the world was full of possibility? Write those things down. Again, don’t judge or censor.

This activity might take you just a few minutes, or you might have to come back to it over several days. But when it’s done, you’re going to have a good starting point for what you want from life. Your next step will be converting those dreams into goals.

Setting goals is one of the most important parts of your happiness journey for a reason. You can’t get where you want to go if you don’t have a map! (Or maybe you can, but it’ll be an accident.)

You need to break each of your overall dreams down into a series of smaller goals. Many of them will contain even smaller goals within them. This will allow you to know exactly where you’re headed and what steps you need to take next.

Each of your goals should employ the SMART framework. The acronym stands for “Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Based” and should be the standard by which you judge all of your goals. If one doesn’t fit the framework, you should revise it until it does.

Assume that one of your goals is to buy a house. This is a common goal. Does “Buy a house” fit the SMART criteria? Well, it’s Specific, Measurable, Attainable, and Relevant, but is it time-based? No. So, you can revise it by changing it to “Buy a house within five years.” Now it’s a SMART goal!

It’s still a nebulous goal, though. What does that mean? Are you going to wait five years, then walk into a bank and walk out with a mortgage? No; there are many intermediate steps between here and there. So, you need to break the overarching goal of buying a house down into intermediate SMART goals.

How do you do that? List all of the things you need to do before you can qualify for a mortgage. Let’s say you have medical debt, credit card debt, a car loan, and no savings for a down payment. Those are all things you’ll need to remedy before you can buy a house.

Your five-year SMART plan to buy a house could look something like this:

Year 1 -Save $1,000 emergency fund and pay off medical debt

Year 2 -Pay off credit card debt

Year 3 -Pay off the car loan and save $1,000 for a down payment

Year 4 -Save $4000 for a down payment

Year 5 -Save $5000 for a down payment and buy the house

Is each of these subgoals a SMART Goal? Yes. They’re Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based. You either reach them or you don’t; there’s no in-between. They’re all measurable, relevant, and time-based. All must be accomplished before achieving your overall goal.

You can apply this framework to all of your goals. A SMART goal is an achievable goal.

Positive Thinking and Happiness

Happiness is greatly enhanced by positive thinking. Not only that, but negative thinking can destroy happiness and make it harder for you to reach your goals. Positive thinking has several powerful effects on the mind. These are just a few of them.

Stress Reduction

Positive thinking has been shown to reduce stress levels. This makes you feel better and handle adverse events better. Lower stress levels also improve your health by reducing blood pressure and blood sugar. This leads to a lower chance of developing chronic illnesses. All of these things lead to more happiness.

Cognition Improvement

Negative thinking harms your brain function. Training your brain to think positively has been shown to improve cognition and boost brainpower in many areas, from empathy to decision-making to academic success. The effects on happiness might be secondary, but they’re powerful.

Lowered Anxiety

Too often, negative thinking leads to anxiety, which leads to more negative thinking and more anxiety. It becomes a self-reinforcing feedback loop. Beginning positive thinking interrupts that loop and provides a reset for your brain. Continuing positive thinking keeps you from going back into the loop, permanently lowering your anxiety levels. That increases happiness. It also makes you healthier, which affects happiness too.

Improved Mood

Depressed mood is one of the primary side effects of negative thinking. So are grouchiness, grumpiness, cynicism, and more downtrodden emotions. Positive thinking does the opposite -it lifts your mood, making you happier, more cheerful, more upbeat, and more optimistic. Practising positive thinking for an extended period can affect permanent changes in your daily mood and thus your happiness.

Better Relationships

All the effects of negative thinking can lead to strained or damaged relationships. It can be hard to find friends or even spend time with family if you’re constantly being negative. Positive thinking, on the other hand, improves these relationships. It’s easier to be around you and you enjoy the company more when you’re in a better mood. What effect do better relationships have on happiness? They increase it, of course.

These five ways positive thinking improves your happiness levels are only the start. If you want to experience these effects for yourself, start working on training your brain to think positively today. You can use affirmations, meditation, gratitude, or any of many other techniques. (Or combinations thereof.) What do you have to lose? Nothing and you could gain the whole world!

Why Relationships Are So Important to Happiness

Humans are social creatures. We are hardwired to live in small groups with lots of close, positive connections. For most of human history, that meant living in either tribes or extended families. This is how humans naturally live and what your brain still wants to do.

The modern world has taken humans out of this natural environment and forces most of us to live either by ourselves or with only one or two people. Your brain doesn’t understand this and isn’t rational enough for anyone to explain it to. All it knows is that you’re supposed to live with multiple other people, and you don’t.

What happens when you take any other animal out of its natural environment and don’t provide it with a suitable substitute? The animal doesn’t do so well and becomes sad, lonely, and possibly even depressed. The same thing happens to humans who don’t have enough good relationships.

Now, this doesn’t mean you should run out and try to create an extended family or recreate a neolithic tribe, but it does mean that you need to have a certain number of healthy, positive relationships to be healthy, not to mention happy. How many? Experts differ, but it seems to vary by person. Everyone seems to have a minimum level of social interaction they need to be mentally healthy, and that’s probably tied to the number of relationships they need.

Introverts probably need fewer relationships than extroverts, for example. What matters far more than the quantity of those relationships is the quality of them. You need to have healthy, positive relationships. Negative or toxic relationships are just as, if not more, harmful than not having any relationships at all.

What should you do if you don’t have enough positive relationships? You need to work on connecting with other people and developing some. Join groups or clubs dedicated to your interests. Start volunteering for a cause you care about. Get out of the house and start meeting people. Once you meet people you like, slowly deepen the relationship by spending time with them. Learn to open up and be vulnerable.

If you have negative or toxic relationships, you need to work on those too. Own up to any toxic behaviour of your own. Do your best to repair the relationship. If that doesn’t work, you need to end it or distance yourself from it. Life is too short for bad relationships.
