5 Ideas For New Year Self Care

Create A Self-Care Routine

A self-care routine is an individualized set of activities, which can range in intensity and frequency, that provide you with personal care in response to the stress in your life.

A self-care routine can include activities such as starting a gratitude journal, taking deep breaths, meditation, exercise, yoga, listening to music, taking a bubble bath or shower, taking time for yourself away from work or school, spending quality time with loved ones, and having a good night’s sleep. Even the little things can make a huge difference.

A self-care routine can be created by determining what aspects of your personal wellness need attention, setting self-care goals, and creating a plan to address those needs.

How to create a self care routine

  • First, a self care routine should be a comprehensive plan that includes physical health, and emotional and mental health.
  • You should identify the specific goals for the self-care period. What areas of your life do you need to concentrate on? Are your basic needs being met?
  • Think about what you need to add to your life to improve it, any healthy habits you want to start and also if there is anything you need to remove.
  • Don’t do this the wrong way. Only choose activities that you are going to enjoy. Your routine is not going to work if it becomes something you dread.
  • Be realistic when planning your new routine and take small steps. Start small and manageable, and know your limitations. It’s no good committing to things on a regular basis that you just don’t have the time for.
  • Consistency is key. If you plan to do something for 10 minutes every day then stick to it. it is so much easier to form a habit when you are consistent.
  • Make sure you set aside time for yourself every single day. Do not over commit yourself and then try to squeeze in your self-care. That just doesn’t work. Set yourself reminders so you have no excuse for missing it.
  • Have a self-care buddy. Find a friend who has a common goal and is as eager to implement self-care as you are. You can swap notes and check in on each other to ensure you are both sticking to the plan. Having a support system in place is going to make things so much easier.

Set Attainable Goals

New year, new you. This time of year is typically when we make goals and resolutions to keep us on track for the next twelve months.

The key is to look at the big picture, figure out your long term goal then break this up into smaller more manageable short term goals. I am going to tell you how this can be done in an easy and achievable way.

The Benefits Of Setting Goals

Setting goals for yourself gives you a clear sense of direction and something to aim for. They give you hope and something to achieve. The more you accomplish the more you will be motivated to reach your end goal.

Setting goals gives you focus. We all have plans and ideas in our heads. Writing down what is achievable makes it much easier to focus on where you want to go and how you will get there.

Setting specific goals and achieving them helps to build your confidence. As you achieve each small goal, your confidence in achieving the next one increases.

How To Set Achievable Goals

This technique is the one that I find to be most effective for setting goals. I find it extremely useful for setting goals I can achieve.

  • S – Specific (or Significant) – The goal must have a specific outcome. Your goals need to be defined clearly and understandable. Add as much detail as you can so it is clear what you want to achieve.
  • M – Measurable (or Meaningful) – You need to be able to track your progress which will keep you motivated.
  • A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented) – You must set a goal that you believe you can achieve.
  • R – Relevant (or Rewarding) – Your goal needs to matter to you and fit in with your other goals. Each goal needs to be worth achieving and you need to be sure you are setting it at the right time for you.
  • T – Time-bound (or Trackable) – The goals you set need a target date so you have a deadline to focus on.

A Few Tips For Setting Goals

Be sure to record your goals in a notebook or spreadsheet. Seeing it written down in front of you gives the goal power and you are much more likely to achieve it.

Prioritise your goals. One goal to concentrate on is much easier than three or four.

Try to keep your goals small. It will take much longer to achieve a larger goal and you could get discouraged at your progress. Break up larger goals into a few smaller ones.

Don’t forget to set realistic goals that you know are possible for you to achieve.

Go On Then, You Can Have A Resolution

As you can gather I’m not a huge fan of making a new year’s resolution, but if you go about it the right way they can work.

You have to ensure that your resolution is not vague, in fact, the more specific the better. That doesn’t just mean the usual “watch less TV” or “exercise more” kind of resolution. You need to be absolutely clear about what you want to achieve.

So here’s an example. A few years ago I realised that I wasn’t spending time with my friends as much as I would like and had such a busy schedule with extra work that I was hardly leaving the house. So my New Years’ resolution was that every time I was invited out with a friend I would say yes. Now that’s much more specific than just saying I would try to go out more.

The thing is, it worked. As long as I was available I said yes to every invitation and made sure I didn’t take on extra work. I had an amazing year.

So as long as your resolution is something that will improve your life and is super specific and intentional then go crazy.

So there you go. New year self care doesn’t have to be difficult.

Well, I hope you found something there to take you into the New Year. Have a good one and remember to take care of yourself
